I've heard it said over that last few years, Technology is great... if it works. Yes, sometimes it does not work. This weekend a patron came in to pick up a hold and the book was not here! She got a call from out automated system too early it seems. I think most of the time it will work with time and patience especially.
I found out first hand how usefull technology could be for me. Last week I was sick, and completlly lost my voice. I could not call in sick, I would have had someone else to do it for me, but I sent an email. To check on prescription I used Walgreens phone system to determine it was ready before I drove there and squeaked out my name. To keep in touch with family and friends I used facebook. Caller ID helped me decide which phone call to pick up and what to let go. Last week I really appreciated technology.
I have also noticed that some people are afraid of technology. My mom is a key example. Just mention "internet" and she gets nervous. She doesn't even like to use email, and that's just typing, right? She thinks it's her age, but I know people in their 80's that use computers regurally. We see them in our library. In my opinon it's about willingness to learn, getting over your fear, try something new, and benefit from what technology can bring to our lives.
Technology is great but...
